If you've been following the site for a while, you know I'm a huge fan of the Mac application "Self-Control." You put in websites you don't want to access, you turn it on, and they're blocked for up to a day (you choose the time length).
Well, a brilliant reader of the site out in Dubai shared with me some Terminal commands to extend the maximum length of blocking sites up to one month.
Be careful if you do this.
I actually had to take off some of the "mostly bad but occasionally necessary" sites from my blacklist, because I don't want to commit to a month of not using them. But for pure distraction, here you go.
Self-Control is only a Mac OSX application, so this works on Mac. To make it so you can block sites for a month, open "Terminal" and enter these two lines one at a time --
defaults write org.eyebeam.SelfControl BlockLengthInterval -int 1440
defaults write org.eyebeam.SelfControl MaxBlockLength -int 43200I would strongly recommend you edit your blacklist before turning it on, and also do a trial for 4 days or a week before going for the whole month.
One of the largest productivity gains I ever got was going to a work computer / play computer setup.
I'd read about Paul Graham implementing it, and a few other people I respect. So when I switched over to Mac, I kept my old Toshiba for surfing the net and otherwise screwing around, and would only work or do work-like things on the Mac.
It worked well.
Not only was I more productive, I was happier. And I mean, really truly happier across the board. In the moment-by-moment, I was either fully disengaged and feeling good about it after working or when deciding to take a break. And when I was working, I focused. When I got to a hard problem, I kept going and pushed through it. It produced both more calm and more triumph. It was a good thing.
But then... eventually, things start to crack. And once they do, it's hard to get the magic up.
Infusing flavor into your favorite alcohol is like a home invasion on your poor little bottle. Don't worry, they will be friends soon enough. Let me share some of my own experiments and maybe you can share yours.
Macadamia Bourbon
I have currently started on a full bottle of Maker's Mark with a pound of fresh, raw macadamia nuts. Any nut can be used really. I'm calling this one Maker's Mac.
