New Word: intek

I needed a new word, so I just made one.

intek: hybrid of "internalize" and ancient Greek "teknik"

intek: To go from a state of knowing a craft or skill theoretically to knowing how to perform that craft or skill in the real world.

I was sitting in Pacific Coffee thinking about business. There's a lot of things I know in a theoretical sense right now, but I haven't built into myself to the point where they're running smoothly. The same concept could apply to anything that needs real world practice - you know something in theory, but in practice you're still doing it wrong.

As far as I know, there's no great word for this. Before "intek", you have theoretical knowledge. After intekking, you can now do in the real world and really know it at a deeper and more meaningful level.

America runs on sex

On The Thoughtful Young Djedi from Bermuda

This past weekend I watched American Beauty. It is a great film in its own right and often forgotten about in best film conversations (even after winning multiple Oscars). That’s a real shame because not only is it a superb film but it also explains the western world quite thoroughly. The film is not flashy nor does it have many suspenseful plotlines. Instead it’s a very subtle analysis on the power of sexuality in our everyday lives.

The film opens with a monologue from Kevin Spacey, who plays a middle aged office worker named Lester Burnham. Lester hates his job and in many ways hates his life as well. He’s married to Carolyn, an ambitious real-estate broker that pays him no mind. He also has a sixteen year old daughter named Jane who despises him. Neither his wife or daughter respects him nor does he possess any qualities to be respected. From the start of the movie it is very clear that he has become a shell of his former self.

The opening scene shows Lester masturbating in the shower before his daily commute to work. We later find out that Lester and Carolyn are estranged and have not been intimate in years. They are both sexually frustrated but have no desire to be intimate with each other. This drives Carolyn closer to another real estate rival named Buddy Kane. They begin to have an affair and are caught in action by Lester.

At this point Lester has become a changed man. He quit his job in grand fashion, extorting his firm for over a year’s worth of salary. Lester knew of a senior VP using company funds to pay for prostitutes and used that as ammunition to get a healthier severance package. After quitting his job he started working at a local fast food restaurant when he spots his wife and co-adulterer as they pass the drive-thru. He’s not hurt or angry and uses this omission in trust to his advantage. Now his wife cannot say anything to him and he is free to do as he pleases.
